When we think of Germany we think of a harsh history, mountains, and for the most part, castles and old towns – and we’re not entirely wrong with that conclusion. Germany might have a harsh history, but it has beautiful places that are easy on the eyes. The history here is amazing and humbling and should be experienced at least once in your lifetime – and while your here, you need to check out these other fascinating sites!
1. Visit The Dachau Concentration Camp
Amazing and humbling place. You will feel a plethora of emotions when you walk the grounds knowing what atrocities happened here. We recommend the audio tour and to take your time to see the many exhibits that are in the museum house and throughout the camp. These exhibits are well kept and they show and chronicle the life of the people that lived, died and survived here.
2. Hike The Partnach Gorge
A fun, magical walk to remember! The water falls from the mountains and joins the river below – the dark and wet walk through the small caves and the formation of the rocks – it’s a beautiful work of nature!
3. Check Out The Burg Eltz Castle
12th-century castle with towers and turrets, surrounded by forest, with treasury and Knights’ Hall! Just like in the Disney movies 😉
4. Explore The Externsteine
Germany’s Sacred Stone Formation- an incredible site with history dating back to the Stone Age.
5. Visit Rothenburg
From the half timbered houses, to the uneven cobbled stone streets, to the ancient walls that surround this city, there is so much to explore – Go on a watchman’s tour of the city at night and discover German history in a fascinating way – walk the ancient walls of the city or climb the Rathaus Tower for the perfect birds eye view of the village below.
6. Visit The Berchtesgaden National Park
Amazing National Park offering so many unique tours! Take the Eagle’s Nest tour led by Christine Harper! Snow capped mountains all around, fresh air, good beer and beautiful churches.
7. Walk Across The Bastei Bridge
The views of the sandstone formations, river, valley, and forest are stunning. If you like mixing your vacation time between cities and nature, this place is a must-see.
8. Explore The Black Forest
The name conjures up images of a wild, isolated place where time passes slowly. Here you will find beautiful serene landscapes such as waterfalls, mountains and beautiful dense forests.
9. Hike Leutaschklamm Gorge
Legend has it that the Leutaschklamm is home to ghosts and goblins who live deep down in the gorge. Have a look for yourself, but even if you don’t find any, the scenic panoramic walkway on high bridges over roaring waters won’t leave you disappointed
10. Witness The Obersee Lake
Located in Berchtesgaden National Park this beautiful lake is a MUST SEE. The lake has crystal clear water and it is surrounded by mountains not too far from the Austrian border.
