Wow Kansas has such a stereotype to be a large flat boring land, filled with houses miles in between of each other, cows and natural disasters such a twisters. The Wizard of Oz made its mark here being Dorothy’s home where a tornado swept her up and dropped her off into some far away land. Well, we think we figured out why Dorothy wanted to get home so badly, Kansas is interesting as well as beautiful.
1. Walk Among The Monument Rocks
These famous rock formations are also referred to as the “chalk pyramids” and they are filled with fossils. You really don’t know what could be hiding in these amazing pyramids but what an amazing experience to walk through them and feel the powerful stories they want to tell.
2. Visit The Santa Fe Lake Falls
Yes, Kansas has beautiful waterfalls, Santa Fe Lakes is just one of the many.
3. Walk Among The Abandoned Amusement Park, Joyland
Once the largest theme park in Kansas that had a life span of an astonishing 55 years! Children would beg their parents for a day at joyland and they would line up at the cotton candy machines and merry go rounds, laughing and playing that could be heard from miles around. Now, it’s an empty lot with broken down attractions and inescapable eery silence.
4. Visit The Kansas City Library
Ok, just look at this library – how could you NOT want to go inside and explore?
5. Go Underground & Explore The Salt Museum
Strataca is an underground adventure 650 feet below the Kansas prairie and is the only salt mine tour of its kind in North America. That’s good reason enough in our eyes to go check this out.
6. Visit The Sauer Castle
This old abandoned house hasn’t had an owner in some time now. It was originally built in the late 1800’s and the couple who lived there experienced many heartaches here. Apparently, the wife hung herself upstairs in 1919. Many claim it’s haunted. Do you dare to walk around the property?
7. Relive The Old West Era At The Old Cowtown Museum

8. Experience The Rolling Plains Of Kansas At Cimarron National Grassland

9. Explore Elk City State Park For The Day
Camp, fish, boat, hike and picnic at this wonderful park. This is truly one of those places you spend the day exploring and animal watching.
10. Check Out The Dalton Gang Hideout Meade
In 1887 this house was built for the Dalton Gang! There is a tunnel that was built into the floor that went from the house to the barn outback that supposedly was used to elude police for years. Just up the hill there is the Heritage House that is fully furnished to the 1800’s style homes – if you come here plan on staying for a bit.
