New Zealand offers an abundance of opportunities to enjoy life as it was meant to be enjoyed and fall in love with nature – it’s hard not to here. New Zealand EASILY makes our top picks for places to visit.
1. Take The Boat Tour Of The Milford Sound
We’re only going to tell you this once – stay at the Milford Sound Lodge, buy the Bed and Boat Package for $168 per person. This package included a one night accommodation in a twin room (two single beds), a full breakfast ( anything in their menu), a 2.5 hour cruise on the Sound (includes a substantial picnic lunch and entrance to the underwater observatory). This is a steal of a deal lifetime experience!! Picture you and your lover sailing up this stunning sound through the toppling mountains and feeling – that’s right FEELING all the magical waterfalls? The captain makes the effort to make frequent slow downs so you can observe the seals, get wet from the waterfalls and observe the Rock and vegetation. This experience is like a dream that you think you’re going to wake up from, it’s more magical than any Disney cruise that’s for sure. Well worth it.
2. Walk Among The Redwoods At Whakarewarewa Forest
A wonderful and “easy” hike through this magical redwood forest. Soak in this beauty because you can only find redwoods in certain parts of the world as they are one of the oldest species of trees. You could be walking among the ancestors of dinosaurs long before we were here and some species that will be walking here long after were gone. You can also find some of the clearest waters here, and when we say clear we mean CRYSTAL clear. There are numerous tracks specifically designated for each, and for horse riders, and some are shared – enjoy yourselves.
3. Explore The Hamilton Gardens
Magnificent gardens displaying some of the most vivid types of flowers and plants from so many diverse cultures of the world. There are many different gardens here so be sure to walk around the property and smell each one – yes stop and smell all the flowers! The Cafe at the Hamilton Gardens provides excellent food as well so stop in for some tea and cookies or maybe a burger if that’s more your thing!
4. Fall In Love With Lake Tekapo
Well first things first, take at look at that water! This lake offers some stunning views and is such a peaceful place to go and relax, maybe have a picnic and just enjoy your company. The night sky on a clear night is just incredible and breathtaking – no other way to explain that. There are also some hot pools here you can soak in and time doesn’t move here, so there is plenty of it to sit and admire the lake and mountains. There are also plenty of great spots to eat dinner and be entertained. Mckenzies restaurant is fabulous for food and the challenge dish on the Stonegrill will keep the steak lovers entertained.
5. Do The Vigorous Hike Through The Tongariro Alpine Crossing
Ok, honestly this isn’t an “easy” hike like we suggested Whakarewarewa Forest to be, but if you’re an experienced hiker, we highly suggest this for you and your lover. Tongariro crossing is a 24 km walk through mountains, jungle, volcanoes and all kinds of breathtaking landscape. A one in a lifetime experience you will never forget. If you feel you’re up to the challenge – just do it!
6. Witness The Birds At Tiritiri Matangi Island
For either a great day trip or an overnight stay, Tiritiri Matangi is a fantastic trip for nature lovers and particularly bird watchers. The birds here are exotic and rare and can be seen if your in the right spot at the right time and Tiritiri Matangi is the right spot! Reservations on the ferry are advised especially if you are wanting to stay overnight in the bunkhouse, we also suggest you book well in advance! The island is beautiful and offers various trails with wonderful walks and the history and conservation work that has been done on this island is incredible.
7. See The Seal Pups At Ohau Waterfall Walk In Kaikoura
This is an awesome little walk to some gorgeous falls where you can witness baby seals frolicking and playing with each other. You can watch them play and relax in the stream and show-off under the falls – it’s truly a magical experience! Yes we know we use that “magical” word a lot when describing New Zealand, but please tell us where else you can experience such amazing beauty. This place is most certainly worth a visit. Go in winter to witness these seal pups, and this should go unspoken but we’ll say it anyway, please be respectful of these young wild animals.
8. Walk Through Cathedral Cove
Cathedral Cove is a beautiful secluded beach that is accessible by water or by a 45 min hike. As you’re walking (hiking really) you will also stumble upon Stingray and Gemstone Bays. It is required of you to witness the stingrays here hence the name, and as far as Gemstone Bay, it sounds like a gem so stop there too! If you get to Cathedral Cove during low tide, walk through the cove and witness all the rock formations inside!!
9. Do The New Zealand Wine Tours
We heard this is a TON of fun. So we highly suggest you look into doing this while your enjoying your stay in New Zealand – especially if wine is your thing.
